Man-made disaster that resulted in a serious damage to the us and the environment in which we sustain.

We feel totally helpless when nature decides to punish us using earthquakes, floods or tornado. This natural calamity destroys the environment and human lives to unimaginable levels. But sometimes other destruction, many times bigger than natural calamities originate from our own human race which results in man-made disasters. The stupidity or negligence by some of them lead to the destruction of many.



Below are the five of that man-made disaster that resulted due to negligence or laxity.

Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster.



 A Nuclear disaster that occurred on 26th April 1986 at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. This accident occurred during a system test at reactor number 4 which resulted into nuclear fallout into the atmosphere. This disaster affected 350,400 Human lives to migrate from the affected place and cost around 18 billion rubles to USSR.

Deepwater Horizon oil spill.


In the Gulf of Mexico, oil rig began sinking because of explosion and oil started spilling on April 20, 2010, which continued to flow till July 15, 2010. According to the estimate of US government, a total of 4.9 million barrels of oils was discharged into the sea. Yes, the aftermath is imaginable.



Al-Mishraq fire.


The largest amount of Sulphur dioxide was released into the atmosphere when the fire took over the state-run Sulphur plant in Al-Mishraq. The plant continued to burn for about three weeks and it put about 21,000 tons of Sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere, petrifying the people living in the nearby area.

London’s Great smog of 1952.


Due to intense chilling winter, that year people burned more coal to lessen the chill. Add that to the Industrial pollution, Great smog was formed. It lasted from 5th December 1952 to 9th December 1952. 12,000 fatalities and 1,00,000 were made ill due to Big Smoke. Due to this Clean Air Act, 1956 was introduced.

The Union Carbide Gas Disaster(Bhopal Gas tragedy).



Considered as the world’s worst industrial disaster, the Union Carbide gas leak occurred on the night of 2-3 December 1984. A government affidavit in 2006 stated that the leak caused 558,125 injuries, including 38,478 temporary partial injuries and approximately 3,900 severely and permanently disabling injuries. The UCC CEO, Anderson was charged with manslaughter by Indian authorities. He was declared a fugitive from justice by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Bhopal on February 1, 1992, for failing to appear at the court hearings in a culpable homicide case. A formal extradition request was issued in 2003.
